Demonstrations & Activities
All events will take place on the Saturday and Sunday of the relevant Open Studios weekend.
Holborn – 9 & 10 June
1.30 – 2.00 pm | Tie Making: Bespoke Hand Sewing
The art of hand sewing is in the preparation; menswear designer Ian Scott Kettle will demonstrate the tie making process from start to finish while discussing the performance of different cloths and the origins of the gentleman’s cravat.
2.00 – 2.30 pm | Painting on Water
Watch paper marbler, Lucy McGrath demonstrate her craft; ‘floating’ paint on a bath of thickened water, manipulating it to create striking patterns and transferring these on to paper and 3D forms.
2.45 – 3.15 pm | Art Textiles workshop
This workshop will explore the versatility of collage and colour with textile artist Onome Otite showing us how to tell stories and communicate ideas. Working with recycled and mixed materials, participants will explore cultural associations and personal responses to create a story. Open to all ages and limited numbers.
All weekend in Studio E7 | Maps and journeys celebrate narrative.
Textile artist, Ekta Kaul, invites visitors to craft their journey to our Open Studios event at Holborn on one of three maps: Greater London, United Kingdom and a global map. Ekta will use thread to link these journeys to Cockpit Arts following the event.
Deptford – 16 & 17 June
1.30 – 2 pm | Lighting for makers and collectors
In this practical introduction, glass artist Shelley James will demonstrate options for lighting artworks and discuss the pros and cons of different technologies such as incandescent, halogen and LED. She will finish with a brief guide to watts, lumens, colour and temperature.
2.15 – 2.45 pm | Painting on Water
Watch paper marbler, Lucy McGrath demonstrate her craft; ‘floating’ paint on a bath of thickened water, manipulating it to create striking patterns and transferring these on to paper and 3-D forms.
The Worshipful Company of Turners Cockpit Arts Award winners, Eleanor Lakelin and Darren Appiagyei, will be showing their work at the Open Studios in Deptford.
