Eleanor Lakelin is one of the 30 finalists for the Loewe Craft Prize 2022

Article from Cockpit Journal

Lakelin has been shortlisted for her sculpture The Landscape of Memory. Her piece was selected from over 3100 works submitted from 116 countries and regions around the world,

Created from turned and hollowed-out British sequoia, this vessel has been sandblasted to reveal the denser winter wood, softer summer growth and flashes of yellow sapwood. Carved off the lathe, Lakelin has followed the contours of the grain to create a deep undulating form with mottled surface that highlights the patterning of the wood. The vessel has been finished with a hand-made iron solution to evoke the hillsides and iron-stained rocks and rivers of the Welsh landscape.

The Landscape of Memory is a particularly personal piece, which draws on my deep-rooted connection to the valleys of Mid-Wales. Sequoia is tannin-rich so I make and use iron solution like a painter’s palette to evoke the light moving across the hillside and the iron-stained rocks and streams of the Mawddach valley.

The piece will be included in an exhibition at the SeMoCA in Seoul, South Korea running from 1 – 31st July. The overall winner will be announced by the Jury on 30th June.

Lakelin joined Cockpit in 2011 as a recipient of our Worshipful Company of Turners Award. Other Cockpit Turners Awardees include Darren Appiagyei, Jason Lock, Memories of Green and Chloe Robertson. Mike Groves is the current Awardee.

Applications for our next Turners’ Award open in a few weeks’ time on 1st March 2022.

The Turners’ Award at Cockpit was the catalyst for pushing my practice forward as an artist and maker in wood.
