From the fall of Singapore to the surrender of Japan my father was a POW under the Japanese. Learning more about this period of his life and those whom he served with has been a lifelong journey of discovery. In fact, even now, it is possible to find records which have only just been digitised. The talk covers a personal perspective of our family journey to, and from, Singapore, the reasons for the railway, the reality of ‘The Bridge over the River Kwai’, the construction, operation and aftermath of this important period in our history. Accompanying my father to reunions with fellow ex POWs gave me one side of the story and travelling to Thailand to see the railway in situ has helped my family to really understand this part of our history. And I hope to share this with you. Col Rob Lucas
The talk will be delivered by Past Master Col Rob Lucas.
