October 2013

The City of London Historical Society is organising a battlefield visit to Ypres next August 29,30 and 31st and on behalf of the organising committee, I am writing to seek expressions of interest.

In 2014 will be the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War and it is appropriate that we mark this singular event.

Click here for a flyer giving the outline details of the 3 day event. At this stage all that is necessary is to register expressions of interest using the email address given on the flyer.

The event will start with a reception on the Friday evening with participants arriving in Ypres having made their own travel arrangements. To help in this we shall be sending out details of travel by Eurostar from London to Lille (prices will be available some 4 months in advance at which time bookings can be made). For those who wish to travel by car we will provide details of ferry crossings as well as information about travelling to France from Dover by Eurotunnel.

Places will be limited and determined by the numbers that can be accommodated for the Civic Dinner at Cloth Hall in Ypres on the Saturday evening. Rooms have been reserved in superior class hotels in the centre of Ypres and participants will be able to take up these reservations and be responsible for their own costs.

The highlight of the tour will be when our Lord Mayor lays a wreath at the Menim Gate on behalf of the City of London. The Lord Mayor will then join us and Dignitaries from Ypres for a Civic Dinner in the magnificent Cloth Hall.
The tour on Saturday will use luxury air conditioned coaches with toilet facilities. We shall visit German and Allied trenches, the Allied cemetery at Tyne Cot, the German cemetery at Langermark and Passchendaele as well as several museums including the Flanders Fields Museum in Ypres.

On Sunday there will be a further optional tour or participants can explore Ypres before dispersing on Sunday afternoon.

We anticipate the cost at around £200 per person (participants to meet their own travel and hotel costs)
Please look at the flyer and register your expression of interest by sending an email with your contact details to ypres@environmental.org.uk with no obligation at this stage.
