About this Event

Where: online, tickets via Eventbrite

The Master & Consort of The Worshipful Company of Clockmakers have pleasure in inviting you to join them in an art lecture, compiled and presented by the art historian, Michael Howard, especially for The Clockmakers Company.

This talk will explore one of the most compelling aspects of painting; how artists over the centuries have faced the challenge of representing time in all its different dimensions – experiential, physical, biological and spiritual – in a medium that is characterised by stillness.

We will explore how artists including Leonardo da Vinci, Edvard Munch, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso have all tackled this troublesome problem. In doing so we will also consider the ways in which we too, as spectators, can use time to enrich our appreciation, pleasure and understanding of some of the world’s greatest masterpieces.

Michael is a published author and exhibited artist at the Royal Academy of Arts. He taught both academic and studio-based students for over three decades at The Manchester Metropolitan University.

Tickets are available for £10 per device.
