Turners earn ‘Top Gun’ at Clay Pigeon Shoot

On 8-9th September 2020 the 26th Anniversary Annual Inter-Livery clay pigeon shooting competition was held at the coveted Holland & Holland shooting grounds in Northwood, Middlesex. The Turners team had much to live up to, having last year being awarded the main prize, the ‘Glorious 12th’ team, which came with a £1,000 charity donation, as well as Top Gun award, also earning a £500 charity donation.

This year’s team was captained by Liveryman Shaun Stacey with team members Past Master Nic Somers and Liverymen Richard Lucas and Lex Agathangelou; not forgetting the team manager Fred Bain.

The team turned up on a cloudy September morning to the shooting grounds; this year with some slight restrictions in numbers and programme due to COVID-19, but fortunately the shoot was still allowed to go ahead with 82 teams and over 300 competitors across 2 days. The fantastic event commenced with a breakfast on the club terrace followed by 11 stands of shooting, including the infamous ‘flush’ where 80 clays are delivered in quick succession to be managed as fast as possible buy the whole team at once. As if the venison sausage rolls doing the rounds as snacks between shoots wasn’t enough, a full lunch was given on the range followed by a prize giving with drinks, dessert and cheese and biscuits. All in all a great day out and a fun time had by the many Livery Companies that attended.

To top off this amazing day, our very own Liveryman and professional turner, Shaun Stacey, took away the coveted ‘Top Gun’ award as best shot over the two day period, missing only two clays over the entire day! Shaun is no stranger to this activity of course, having captained the England team and represented England and GB over 30 times in his illustrious career. The team came a respected 15th place overall.

Next year’s event will be back to normal annual timings, COVID-19 dependent, of 12th – 13th May. Interested shots should contact Fred Bain for more detail and Shaun has offered some free tuition from the Top Gun himself for next year!
