Wizardry in Wood 2020
I am a self taught woodturner who is interested in the development of woodturning as an art form as well as maintaining the highest standards of the craft. My work varies depending on many factors. Inspiration comes from looking at the world around me, be it a walk with the dog, or a trip to a museum or gallery.
I am keen to advance my own ability and to raise the awareness of woodturning in a similar way to the way glass and ceramics is perceived. I work in the west of Scotland where I run a small gallery and as a result have been cut off from many influences in my field. Because of this, my work is highly original. I love working in ways that introduce light as a factor integral to my work. Piercing and texturing the surface of the wood is a continual experiment, driving the material to the limits of its structural ability. I love the appearance of wood but I am happy to work the material as a base medium to be covered when needed. The flexibility of wood to be moulded and shaped gives me freedom to play, to really enjoy my time on each piece.
I have been accepted onto the Register of Professional Turners which is supported by the Worshipful Company of Turners. I was Craft and Design Magazines Wood/Metal maker of the year in 2014 and 2016. My work has been displayed internationally, most notably at SOFA in Chicago. I have several pieces in the Daniel Collection the UK’s best collection of wood turned art. My work has been sold all over the world. I run a small workshop gallery in Argyll where I display local artists work as well as my own. I am an international demonstrator of my craft with a growing reputation.
