Wizardry in Wood 2025

Joey Richardson is an internationally acclaimed British woodturner and sculptor whose work transforms reclaimed and sustainable timber into finely detailed, expressive artworks. Renowned for her delicate piercing, rich colour, and flowing forms, she blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary vision to explore the profound connection between humans and trees.

Born and raised in Twigmoor Woods, Lincolnshire, Joey’s lifelong relationship with nature lies at the core of her creative practice. Her MA in Fine Art from the University of Lincoln (2018) deepened her conceptual understanding, enriching the emotional and poetic depth of her work.

A recipient of both a Worshipful Company of Turners Bursary (2005) and QEST/Carpenters Company Scholarship, Joey now gives back to the craft that shaped her career. She serves as President of the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain and Upper Warden of the Worshipful Company of Turners, while also teaching, lecturing, and demonstrating internationally — sharing her passion for excellence and sustainable artistry.

Her sculptures are held in major public and private collections worldwide, celebrated for their innovation, sensitivity, and enduring beauty.

“Every piece of wood holds a whisper of its past; through my hands, it finds a new voice.”

Nature and more specifically, wood, is the driving force in my sculptural practice. It informs my themes and guides my expressions. From memento mori to vanitas through mimesis, my delicate wood forms and contemporary, mixed-media sculptures are informed by and seek to encapsulate nature. It shapes me and in turn, I shape it.
My profound appreciation of wood and natural materials have left their seeds buried deep within my work. They are animated by its spirit, its story and its transitions. To me, there is no greater manifestation of life abundant. Wood warms and restores the soul. Joey Richardson
