A Special Turning Day at Brackenfield SEND School

Graham Legg and Derek Puplett, members of the Derbyshire Dales Woodturners Club, have been teaching at Brackenfield SEND School for the past four years. During this time, woodturning has become a valued and established part of the school curriculum. To celebrate the pupils’ enthusiasm and progress, Graham and Derek organised a special woodturning day, generously sponsored by the Worshipful Company of Turners and the AWGB.

Six fellow members of the Derbyshire Dales Woodturners Club volunteered their time to support and teach on the day, whilst also supplying all the equipment needed. Their generosity and commitment made the event possible, and a huge thank you goes to everyone involved for their support.

The day itself was truly inspiring. Watching the children create at the lathe, seeing their confidence grow, and sharing in their joy and sense of achievement was incredibly rewarding. For many parents, seeing their children succeed in such a hands-on and creative environment was an emotional and proud moment.

The Master of the Turners, Andy Ewens, and Upper Warden Joey Richardson thoroughly enjoyed the day. They spent time with the pupils, shared in their excitement, and presented prizes, giving the children well deserved recognition for their hard work.

With a visit from the Mayor of Erewash and coverage on BBC News, the day created a real buzz. The children were thrilled by the attention, proudly showing off their work and talking enthusiastically about their creations.

It was a powerful reminder of the impact that creative skills like woodturning can have in building confidence, independence, and pride. It was a memorable and rewarding day for pupils, parents, teachers, and supporters alike.
