Meet our newest Cockpit Arts Awardees, Emily Rowley and Benjamin Fletcher

Emily Rowley is a London based sculptural furniture maker creating organic and functional pieces from wood. Having grown up across the length of England in picturesque countrysides, Emily has a deep connection to the natural world that has influenced her choice of medium and the biomorphic forms of her work.

She graduated with a Distinction in Fine Furniture Making from West Dean College of Arts and Conservation.

In 2026, Emily received the Turners Award at Cockpit to explore the possibilities of turned furniture. Her ‘Moonlight Bloom’ collection will be shown at Future Icons Selects during London Craft Week and has been exhibited with the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers.

Benjamin is a Margate-based artist whose practice has always drawn inspiration from, and usually comprises, discarded materials. His work explores themes that lend themselves to coastal habitation; liminal spaces, erosion, decay, rebirth, and the perils of modern living. The outcomes of this exploration used to take the form of mixed media assemblages but he is currently focussing on the creation of vessels, functional, and sculptural forms, using recycled or otherwise unwanted woods.

Cockpit is a registered charity and award-winning social enterprise which is home to over 175 of the world’s finest makers. The Turners Award is designed for aspiring or established turners – ie people who practice the art and craft of turning on a lathe in wood or other materials. The award helps the winning turners by providing the space and time to grow their business, increase profitability and develop their profile.
