Local Woodturning Clubs Support Scout Jamboree

On behalf of the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain (the AWGB , which is the national woodturning organisation) the Sawbridgeworth based woodturning club (East Herts Woodturners) and the Cambridge based woodturning club (Cambridge woodturners), organised hands-on woodturning for scouts and guides attending the week long Cambridge International Jamboree (Camjam) which was held at the Huntingdon Racecourse. Over 5 days, about 250 young people tried woodturning under the supervision of an experienced woodturner.

During the week, the event was visited by Andrew Sindall, Master of the Worshipful Company of Turners. In addition, the President of the AWGB spent some time supervising young people on a lathe and for 2.5 days the SE Area Rep of the AWGB demonstrated woodturning. Another experienced Cambridge club turner demonstrated woodturning for all 5 days. In addition there was a superb display of woodturnings.

Bob Shepherd (Cambridge Club), Master Andrew Sindall, John Leach (Chairman East Herts Club), Mike Rothwell (Woodturning for young people), David Bubbins (organiser of woodturning at Camjam)

After a short safety briefing, each young person had about ½ an hour on a lathe under the individual supervision of a competent turner, during which the young person turned their own wood creation.

Starting in the Autumn, the East Herts woodturning club which celebrated its 25 year birthday earlier this year, will be running a youth section at which young people will be taught basic woodturning techniques. If you are a young person who wishes to join the group should contact John on 01279 657901 or woodturningsurf@uwclub.net. Prior booking is essential as there are a limited amount of spaces available.

The Clubs and the AWGB acknowledge the support of many companies and organisations including SACT, Birchanger Wood Trust, National Trust and the WCT.
