Bishops Crosier for The Bishop of Stepney
Colin Norgate, Member of the Register of Professional Turners (RPT) has recently completed his part of leading a collaboration of highly skilled craftspeople to make a new Crosier for the Bishop of Stepney.
The crosier design brief was to make a crosier incorporating regular use, to be made in three parts for ease of transport. A favourite poem ‘As Kingfishers Catch Fire‘ by Gerard Manley Hopkins, was specified to form part of the design. The use of local timber was preferred.
Colin set to, with a few ideas but with a vision to include other contemporary makers in the process using their knowledge, design and making skills. Enabling a unique piece as a result.
The final result was a Crosier with a Laburnum shaft, with stainless steel connectors, made from a Laburnum tree cut down 30 years earlier in Petersfield (just shows how long I have been working in wood!). The Pewter hoop and anodised aluminium Kingfisher was designed and made by Fleur Grenier a leading pewtersmith who is also a Freeman with The Worshipful Company of Pewterers.
Currently a carrying bag is being made by Sue Lowday, a leather worker of The Art Workers Guild.
The Crosier was due to be shown at “Pewter Live” in London in May, but due to the current restrictions this event has been cancelled.
