Glenn Cornish, Yeoman of the Turners’ Company
Glenn is passionate about wood turning and helping others to start the craft. At its inception, he established turning at the Dorking mens shed. The shed now has four lathes and turning is a big attraction for new members. He teaches there twice a week and members express great satisfaction in their occupation and achievements.
Having been self-taught for many years, Glenn is now in the process of improving both his design and technique. He is experimenting with multiple skills, forms and finishes, including carving and aging techniques. Some of his pieces express a whimsical and lighthearted side of turning, for instance an apple with a large bark inclusion explained by an off-centre turned worm coming out of the top! Having gifted turnings to all of his relatives, Glenn started to sell his turning at stalls about three years ago. He greatly enjoys the interaction with customers, selling mostly boxes, pens and Christmas decorations. He prides himself on using local reclaimed wood, and this year has started processing whole trees for the future. Glenn is using the bursary to attend the Company certificate course run by a previous bursary recipient, Dennis Wake. He aims to continue improving his teaching and providing tuition in a new studio.
