Jason Breach, Yeoman of the Turners’ Company
Born in and living in Devon, Jason teaches and demonstrates throughout the UK, Australia and USA. Jason was introduced to the woodturning lathe at the age of twelve. At the age of 15 he attended a woodturning course with Cecil Jordan; this week long course covered a wide range of items, but also introduced him to the simple art of the turned wooden box. He attended college studying Furniture Design and Management, obtaining a BA (Hons). As much as he enjoys making furniture, his real enjoyment and enthusiasm has always been working upon the wood lathe, even though like most turners Jason can turn his hand to most projects and disciplines.
His development of ideas for turned wooden boxes pushes his creative skills and has led him to create a number of boxes that have won competitions within the UK, including First prize in the Plain Box category of the Worshipful Company of Turners competition 2010.
The “Orbital Arc box” series is his main design focus at present.
Pushing these creative skills and developing new ideas is only limited within Jason’s eyes by the fact that wood as the material is unique, the natural colour and grain pattern should always play a part within this, and not be hidden.
Jason’s reputation with a lathe is box making, these can be round, square, some are neither of these shapes, he pushes the ideas of what a box can be, and the techniques to achieve these creations. The wood playing a major aspect of these designs, the colours and contrast, all being part of this. Jason Breach
Review for one of Jason’s courses 7th November 2022:
For the last 55 years, I have been classified as ‘disabled’. This gives some people an opportunity to apply their own value judgement as to what I can and cannot do.
Recently, I have started woodturning – a hobby which some might think requires two good hands. When my wife bought me a woodturning training course, she found somebody who does not fit this mould.
On the one hand, Jason Breach is a woodturner with a global reputation. A chap like him does not need to be bothered with people like me – or so you might think.
Jason was absolutely brilliant, non-judgemental and approached everything with a fantastic can-do attitude. Over two days of 1-2-1 tuition, Jason imparted so much knowledge and advice. As a result, he has set me on a fantastic road.
With a superb dry sense of humour and fantastic warm heart, Jason has helped me enormously. If you ever think of learning how much fun woodturning can be, then Jason is your man. www.jasonbreach.co.uk, Bob
